Carol, your narrative reminded me of the 1990, Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn movie, Bird on a Wire.
So much symbolism with the solitary bird, sitting (hanging) by a wire. A sky offering more emptiness for the bird. And, you were so right. It definitely is worth a shot. :)
If you think you can't accept something, try to change it. But if this doesn't work, don't be frustrated, but give it later another try. The one who perseveres wins!
