A composite stitch of 18 separate shots, taken from the Mars Spirit Rover. The stitch work was patchy at best so I have tried to fix it as best I can. The breathtaking view here is toward the north, looking down into the drifts and outcrops of the "Tennessee Valley," a region that Spirit was not able to visit during its climb to the top of the hill.

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was, is lost, for none now live who remember it. -Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring

I agree with you. It's breathtaking. I see absolutely no sign of seems. I also really like the colors here. Just other than wordly enough and contrasted enough to show every detail. Nice work. ;)

Amazing photos from the rover. I find the name a little unnerving, who knows, maybe this is what my home will look like in a couple thousand years.

It is an amazing image. What struck me is how similar it looks to some of Earths deserts. The clarity is just wonderful.

It just makes it seem so odd that there, there is no breathable air and the climate is quite cold. It just seems so normal and natural. Great shot.

It's an awesome image, but why is this area called "the Tennessee Valley?"

General landscape names on Mars are usually unofficial nicknames as this NASA press release explains to a degree:

‘Less than two weeks after Spirit landed on Mars, rover engineers and scientists were already planning Spirit's itinerary on the surface. "Go To That Crater And Turn Right" etc. Needless to say, generically referring to features as "that crater," "this rock," or "these hills" could quickly become confusing.’

Often they are given transitory names by the scientists reviewing the data at the time but will inevitably be given formal names at some later date. Nothing more technical than that :-)

Billions and billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of work hours and a snap shot that looks like any tuppeny-happeny desert valley somewhere on earth.

It is without doubt a magnificent achievement, the like of which Pyrrhus would be proud.
