Reminds me of a concept from, I think, Mercedes Lackey. A gate set up by mages to enable one to move instantly from A (somewhere conveniently located nearby, hopefully) to B (somewhere inconveniently located rather further away but which you'd like to visit) instantly. I seem to remember they involved huge amounts of energy and the effects tended to warp or stunt the growth of wildlife too near the gate. Something like that, anyway. This looks highly charged. No wildlife - guess this one must be in outer space. Not sure how convenient that would be... maybe good for those with spaceships, though... Hmmm, mages on spaceships...
