No. 2. the opinion was that the background of no.1 was too light and distracting. i used two lights and a torch. one table lamp to illuminat the right of the flowers, with a shade to keep the light off the background. at the left hand end of the table, there was a Halogen desk lamp, level with the table, and also lighting the right of the flowers. also a shade to darken the background. the torch was covered iluminating the front of the flowers.
what do you think?

I hope you'll agree that this was well worth the new attempt. Much warmer. More elegant. My focus is on the lovely lighting and array of color in that vase and the sparkle of the vase itself. Good for you. The loose petal placement now looks more natural too.

Great composition - the angle of the table, the petals on the tabletop, the reflection of the vase... awesome job!

Beautiful lighting on a really exquisite vase of flowers. I love the way the vase is reflected in the wood. Well done!

You have enhanced the whole image...the vase is beautifully lit up...the table being the mahogony colour compliments all the flowers..and vice versa...plus the vase is reflected...and then the framing is perfect..the flowers are not touching the sides...and so I really feel this is a most perfect still life photo..I love the flower petal placement now too..very veryVERY nice job that you did of editing and trying out things...nice work!!!!

I believe the second half of one's life is meant to be better than the first half. The first half is finding out how you do it. And the second half is enjoying it....

Goodness me, you really put some life into it. The colours seem richer and the sparkle in the crystal really catches the eye. It’s also good to see the entire spray of flowers. This one deserves a twelve but unfortunately…

Hey Buddy...mission accomplished!...a great revision here...much warmer and the darker background and border adds the right mood...to me, a still life is more than just an assortment of items...ideally, it's simplicity should also possess a subtle message or feeling...you have succeeded in capturing that essence...congrats and great work.:Pat.

I also agree that this shot is much better composed than the first. Whoever gave you the advice must have known what they were talking about. The only thing I would have changed here is that I would have positioned the photo off-centre on the background rather than having it right in the middle.

Now this is a still life. The darkness lets the color, glass and rich wood glow. I find the beautiful table and the new vase just as interresting as the casual flowers. Much improved.

Well I saw this image, and I thought I could contribute something new to the comemnts. Clearly though, it's qualities are apparent to others as well. The angle of the table was a very good idea. It allowed the image to have a subtle diagonal that doesn't jump out at the viewer, but enhances the image tremendously.

That sounds like a lot of work just to get the lighting effect.

And I am pleased you took the time because the lighting and the colors are just so spectacular - so I must applaud you for such a magnificant job!

The way it is framed draws one's forcus straight to the flowers and vase. The dark warm brown of the table with the flower buds just completes a splendorous picture.

Again, I'm glad you took the time and effort to take this.
