A sentient being glaring down, withering me with its forceful stare. I see diabolic forces in the image too, and not just because of your description. Would you say it is by movies and stories that we have been molded to share a common impression of this otherwise harmless lamp?
"I never looked for it, gave it no name; yet I knew it always, when the gift of peace came. I stood quite still for the moment that it lasted...Then the light shifted slightly and the moment passed, leaving me...with the lasting echo of its presence.." Diana Gabaldon
"The more we come in contact with animals, and observe their behaviour, the more we love them, for we see how great is their care for their young." - philosopher Immanuel Kant
"Let us forever cherish and hold sacred these moments...for it is our undoing ...should we forget..." -William Shakespeare ... Visit Jhihmoac's Gallery

I see a one-eyed monster lurching through the dark casting death rays on all who have the misfortune to cross its path. Beware the Cyclops children, with its orange stare and crushing foot. Venture not into the woods this Halloween!
Simon Your as daft as a brush. :o)
