I wish they would not have cut out the water in the oceans. It would have looked a lot more prettier if the land was surrounded by the light blue water rather than that dark blue fill-in.

Actually, that is the real color of the ocean. Hence the name, "Earth in True Color." It's good to remember the scale of the image -- even though you might see blue water for a few hundred feet when you look out to sea, that translates to an unnoticable distance on this picture. However, you can see some of the more tropical areas have that beautiful crystal-clear sandy-bottom water which is a bright turquoise color. (Take a look at the bahamas, for instance) :-)
But yeah, I didn't edit this image whatsoever. I just stuck it on a background the same color as the ocean to make the top look a little better than the bottom.
And, Hroethbert: the "white spots in the Southern Ocean" are indeed icebergs. One of them even shows its path over the several exposures, probably left there to compensate for weather. :-)
This caught my eye on the front page when I entered. Thanks for uploading it so I can download it. I hope I got my ups and downs in the correct order. Chaos sometimes reigns.
Just wanted to say that you might have seen this very image in the hit blockbuster "The Day After Tomorrow," which is a fun movie if you haven't seen it.
"It's the nicest weather earth has ever had..." (said in an annoying tone). No, not you or the image, just a quote from Mystery Science Theater 3000 during the entry logo. :-) It is pretty cool, although I REALLY think it was taken during the summer or something, because Minnesota doesn't look like that much of the year. Nice post!
This is really cool. I can see my house from here.
It's kinda funny how you can't even see the tiniest sign of human population. Not even a speck of anything indicating New York or LA or anything like that. Real neat.
