I figure I'd open this up because there are a number of awesome open-source image creation and editing softwares around that noone seems to know about...post your own if you find some...
Modelling-
~Blender(3ds max/Maya)- an awesome 3d modeling and animation tool, the interface is a bit unlike the normal modellers, but it certainly is possible to create quality models with it.[Windows, Mac, Linux]
Image Editing(Photoshop/PSP)-
~The GIMP- forget the low cost alternative of Paint Shop Pro...how about the no cost alternative? The GIMP offers everything that Photoshop has to offer: layers, filters, image creation, manipulation, as well as many of the plug-ins that you would have to buy to get(such as the fractal makers FractFlame and FractExplorer). Must also download GTK for it to work properly. [Windows, Mac, Linux]
~Irfanview- a fairly popular and useful image viewer that can be used to manipulate images, but it's major selling point is the amount of different file formats that can be used(such as icon and animated cursor formats) and it's speed.[Windows]
Landscape Renders(Bryce)-
~Terragen is a software that is free for non-commercial use. I debated whether putting this one up or not because it's truly not freeware, but still it's good software. This is a very good program for creating realistic landscape renders. It's also quite easy to use. [Windows, Mac]
Fractals-
~Tierazon is a good program for creating abstract fractals. The software used to be freeware, and still is, but he's started having people pay money to keep his server online. However, it is still possible to find the freeware installer.[Windows]
~Gnofract 4D has similar features to Tierazon plus a few. I've never used this one, although it looks good.[Linux, ports to Mac]
~Apophysis is a very good freeware frax flame editor and renderer.[Windows]
~ Quat is a 3d fractal making program that can be made to create quality images.[Windows, Linux]
~Note: The GIMP(mentioned earlier) can also be used to make fractals.
Other Stuff-
~and for those who like to mess with audio, Audacity[Windows, Mac, Linux] is great for sound manipulation, and Anvil Studio[Windows] is about as good as it gets freeware-wise in the composition department.
~Messengers
Trillian[Windows] a very good all in one messenger, GaIM[Windows, Linux] is another.
~Spyware and Antivirus
AVG[Windows] or Clamwin[Windows] both very good virus removers and shields. I'd also recommend Lavasoft's Ad-aware[Windows] and Ccleaner[Windows] for other various errors and spyware removal.
Let's not forget other tools which might not be related so closely to Caedes...
Mozilla Firefox - the best web browser out there; more secure, faster, easier to use, and better for the web than Internet Explorer. Get it now if you haven't yet, and you'll never go back.
CDex - A great CD extractor program to make your CDs digital.
Ogg Vorbis - An audio codec, like MP3, except much much higher quality and free of any licensing fees or restrictions. CDex comes with the ability to make Ogg Vorbis files
Winamp - The best all-around audio player for windows. Plays all formats, even videos.
And for those of us who are really nerdy, Gentoo Linux - the most diverse, powerful, and coolest Linux distribution out there.
There is so much more out there; check out Sourceforge for most of it. And if you didn't get it from my sig and from the first item, go get Firefox already! :)
Found this one this afternoon, it seams very impressive. Its called "PhotoFiltre".
Free alternative to Photoshop? Has Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation, Colour Balance, Gamma correction, levels, Contrast, all manner of filters and plugins. Thats just for starters.
The OpenCD. Contains a nice collection of open-source software (Including GIMP, OpenOffice etc.) nicely packedged into one CD. All software has been selected for use on Windows Systems and for their high quality.
I posted this on another forum and thought I should add it here:
The "Exif Image Viewer", displays the EXIF data your camera encodes during shooting.
The screenshot shows pretty well how it works. Details mode allows you to sort by different exif fields which can be handy. At the bottom of that page is an explorer shell extension that creates a tooltip of exif data when browsing in explorer, which can be really useful as well.
There are music tools and software mentioned above. I would like to add the program 1by1 - this is an excellent mp3 player. And that is all it does - one by one. Point it at a directory or at a list of directories and let it go. No fancy skins, no install program needed, simple to configure, tiny tiny size and more. More info on the site.
try picasa 2 and hello from google and if you want to get real brave go to blogger.com and build your own blog, takes 15-20 minutes and you can store fotos there for family and all
Too late. I handed in the school project today. I used The Print Shop to design the cards, but then it occured to me that it was engineered for making many copies of one design instead of one copy of many designs. My partner and I exported them as images and then arranged them in Word to be printed on card stock. I think it worked out rather well, but I spent over 8 hours staring at a computer screen yesterday. Thanks for the help, though.
Don't know if this was posted but Chaoscope is a program that is free to download. Don't know the site but it should be easy to find with yahoo. Also, for examples of what it can do look at ::Igmac's gallery for examples.
Someone might want to check this site out,( fractal software links on paul n. lee's website ) all kinds of fractal freeware, and maybe this one, (www.boxtopsoft.com plugs) plug ins for Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, for Macks and windows.
People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in,
their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

We mustn't forget RawShooter, the RAW image manipulation program. Technically you're supposed to pay for it, but there is no price mentioned on the website. I think they're trying to build a user base before they start charging. For now, though it's free, and MAN! Can you do stuff with it!!! It takes those RAW format images, and lets you change the camera settings after you shoot the photo. What a rush!
I downloaded PovRay but I couldn't install it....apparently wasn't detecting the right file size. I have no idea if it is a glitch with the site or not. Anyone else had this problem?
Sorry. I downloaded and installed it just fine. On the other hand, I have no clue where to start on using it.
Edit: I was super excited about it because the person who recommended it to me mentioned it while pointing out flaws in one of my favorite images made by Bryce and how he could easily fix them. I really wish I had Bryce, so I was anticipating pumping out some crazy images, but it is just as untangible as Blender.
Universe Image Creator - a shareware standalone or plug-in that can be used to design a starfield or other planetary bodies. Easy to use, although perhaps limited in scope and quality.
Somone in here mentioned OpenOffice.org and I have to say it works excelently.
I use Linux now more than I do Windows, and also set my home network up as a linux network, so Knowing some Open-Source software is a must :)
Also, for any of you who also use Linux, even though Apophysis is only for Windows, WINE handles Apophysis very very well. In most cases, it works faster for me.
--for those of you who don't know what WINE is, WINE is basically an emulator for windows apps (I know it's not actually an emulator, but for a good explainations sake, I'll describe it as one).
If any of you are interested in looking at some other open source software that may not necessarily be just for linux, take a look at Gentoo Portage's website and click "Browse portage". It will show you a list of open source softwares, including games and various applications, along with the homepages of their developers.
Until November 7, 2006, we are promotionally discounting the downloadable versions of Express to free. This doesn’t mean that the product turns off after a year, but rather that as long as you download the product before November 7, 2006, you can get it for free and you can use it forever.
and ... from what I understand the above download link is "Direct Install From the Web" .. If you'd prefer to archive and install at your leisure .. use THIS PAGE
I, of course, know nothing of this programming mumbo jumbo, can't teach an old dog new tricks .. My idea of programming is that I Love Lucy comes on after Laverne & Shirley ... so I leave you with this view of things free

Um .. (*looks around*) .. tell me, am I promoting shoddy wares? I don't want any blackmarks on my reputation when I run for President. And I think being led out in handcuffs in front of TV cameras for the "perp" walk is especially undesired
I actually thought that you were going to say .. "Hey, thanks, you saved me a boatload of CA$H"
Does anyone have a copy of POV-Ray 3.6? I've tried to download it off povray.org, but the site keeps timing out on me. If you do, please contact me at wendykroy2mindspring.com
About Irfanview , there is a plugin available that lets you use photoshop filters with Irfanview
So if you don't have PS you can still use all those free filters that are out there.here
Ok, I noticed that nobody mentioned Opera web browser. I know it's a little bloated compared to Firefox, but I like a lot of the features. One feature in particular that I use all the time on Caedes is right clicking on a full size image and viewing properties. If the exif file is still attatched to the image, then you can see what camera was used without opening it in photoshop.

Has anybody tried paint.net I just took a quick look at it and it seems to be very good. It is being developed by the Washington State University. I found it mentioned on lifehacker.com
No-one has mentioned TREEPAD ( www.treepad.com ) which is a general-purpose personal organiser based around a tree structure like windows explorer.
I love it - it lets me organise so many bits of data they way I want to.
Life's complicated enough - for me, treepad helps make it a bit simpler!
BTW, EXCELLENT SITE .... I'm hooked already, and I've only been on the site 5 mins ....
I have just joined and was amazed by the awesome stuff you have on this site and have decided to get a few tricks up my sleeve by browsing and seeing what could be useful, for I have no idea where to start but want to be a part of this soo much... thanks again to all.

Hey if you want a plain-text Html editor for windows, I wrote one, GUI. Download it here :"http://www.freewebtown.com/timw4mail/downloads.html" I add new features as I learn how to. (Extra points if you manage to use up my bandwidth.) And by the way, I use Visual Basic, so whoever hissed Visual Studio, you are going down.

I tried a lot of the little tricks at donationcoder.com and they worked fine, but next time I restarted the computer, they were all gone. Do they need to be reinstalled each time I reboot?
I ALWAYS use the Gimp. It can do fractals better than apophysis (less grain) and it has several photo tools. Anvil is neat for music, still messing around with it... Blender is VERY complex, but it can do amazing things if you have the patience. (i dont!) Just confirming a couple of the freeware...
Google announced on Thursday that it is making Google Sketchup, a 3D modeling program, available to everyone at no cost. The tool, acquired by Google when it recently bought @Last Software, allows you to build three-dimensional versions of a sports stadium, a skyscraper, or even a spaceport, and place those models on Google Earth.

Cybia .. has released Image Inc a Freeware standalone image compositing tool. Its purpose is to blend two images with the help of a transparent mask and various blend modes. Although such functionality is available in major graphics applications, Image Inc lets you do it in a quick and easy way. (and without a host application)
while you're there .. check out his Free Plugins .. (for use with any program that supports the adobe plugin standard)
The .. SmartCurve .. plugin from EasyFilter was developed for Photoshop Elements as a compensation for the missing Curves command, but you can use it in Photoshop and other applications, too. Here is a program that people wanting avatars (their way) might appreciate. It will turn any picture on your hard drive into an avatar with sizes up 150x150 (just a 50x50 is what we need here at Caedes). This little wonder can turn just about anything into a little icon. So for those of you interested....................
DOWNLOAD AVATAR SIZER HERE
Oh oh..i found this gr8 program today! Its elysium diamond: Here
It makes multiplayer online games...umm...well its basically already made just that u can make it however u what...if u know what i mean. Its fun, i wasted my day on it.
The evaluation version can be downloaded alone, or as a plug-in for PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, Corel PhotoPaint (part of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite), ULead PhotoImpact, and others.
These dudes give you a free domain name for your webpage! Whats the catch? Well the blahblah.CO.NR and the fact that you have to put a link from your webpage to theirs (its like a 30x10px button). The way around the problem number 2? Just put a lotta br's and make it way off the screen so no1 sees it. =P For example of a webpage that uses this: Here.
One more thing, all this thingdoes is forward users when they type in blahblah.co.nr to another webhosting site. They dont actually host for you (i dont think). Like on that one link i gave, that site is hosted on geocities, little do you know that that is true. =P
