lol... Obviously because the Vatican is infallible. You're a Catholic Tommy, you should know that by now. ;-) He also might have meant that since Caedes is a latin word where better to find out the correct pronunciation than the Vatican. Latin is the official language of the church. =)

It's pronounced Kay-dez BTW.... I've taken Latin before and with the most commonly practiced form of pronunciation it would be pronouced that way. Although I just recently started learning classical Latin and if pronouced classicaly it would be pronouced Kai-dez (or dess).

As per my post on the other thread, I had a look at a latin pronunciation website. According to them, it should be pronounced like this:

'c' is always pronounced hard, as in 'k'.
'ae', as Caedes said, is pronounced 'ai', as in aisle.
the final 'e' is pronounced as in 'they'
the 's' is pronounced soft (not as in 'z')

So: Caedes is pronounced 'Kai-days'

Whether that actually gets us anywhere, I don't know.

Very good captain hero, I was wondering about the 's' thing. But about the 'e' in the 'des'... e is only pronouced 'A' when it is a long vowel. In all the latin I've ever heard it would be short in this case.

lol... when I think about this I doubt caedes himself ever anticipated all this discussion about the pronunciation. =D

I myself cannot speak latin, so I'm having to rely on this website I came across, which may be wrong. Also I may have misinterpreted it. Possibly it is short 'e', as in 'egg'.

Of course, I guess you can pronounce it any way you want.

In Latin, 'c' in pronounced hard (k) as i learned from GCSE Latin
A non-accented 'e' is pronounced 'ee'
the 's' is, in the suffix 'es' pronounced as a 'z' therefore
the word 'caedes' is pronounced 'kee-deez'

You seem to be mixing your latin: You pronounce 'c' hard, as in classical latin, but ignore the fact that the dipthong 'æ' would therefore be classically pronounced 'ai', as in aisle (your own source shows this). A more modern pronunciation might be 'a', as in 'day', or occasionally 'ee', but you have already signalled the classic route by using the hard 'k'.

The single 'e' would either be 'a' as in 'plate' or possible 'e' as in 'pet'. 'ee' would only apply if you were using the modernised 'english' type pronunciation.

Again, 's' in classical latin would be pronounced soft in just about all circumstances, but only using the 'english' style would it be 'z'

classical 'caedes' would be something like 'kai-days' or maybe 'kai-des' with the 'e' pronounced as in pet.

modern 'caedes' might be something like 'say-dees', but even then there might be all kinds of variations.

As already mentioned above, it probably doesn't really matter how you say it, but I guess it is difficult when trying to talk about it.

Through extensive research and untiring efforts, I have officially found the one correct pronunciation.

The beginning sound, though vastly unrecongnized by the masses, was originally taken from acient dialect of the Albino African Monks who would travel from place to place as nomads while mumbling utter gibberish. The "c" should be pronounced with a throat sucking gargle similar to the formation of "akh" in Hebrew.

The formation of the two vowels combined is occasionly derived from the not-so-commonly known speech of the mute turkey. Originally developed by software designer working for Arcsoft when high, this language is used all over the world by mute turkeys today. As well as a screeching "eee" sound more from the windpipe than the voicebox, it involves a quick little Irish jig, which tends to keep your feet quite busy as you utter the sound.

What appears to be the "d" is rather a form of expressed finality originally intorduced by a rock by the name of Wilbur. Although considered mentaly unstable in his own time, today Wilbur is regarded with the highest respect from poets and the few great minds of the modern era as a genious, and irrefutably beyond the comprehension level of normal human life (if it exists). It should be pronounced with low vigor, as if meant to imply that the speaker is not a simple artist describing a web site, but actually the the head embassador of Uganda choking on sushi.

The last sound of this peculiar word is a fraction of the least popular war chant spoken by the Mongels while bathing. Though frowned upon when spoken, the sound actually refers to the use of a lampshade while boiling a combination of Arabian stew and Canadian pudding while stuck in a tree, all while gurgling. Its only modern reference was subtly made by Strongbad when he was rejecting one "Brianrietta". It sounds similar to the mating call of the dodo with several extra vowels placed about in random intervals, all while stuffing one's self with popcorn and snapping to a jazzy tune.

In short, it is a rather complex word, one which I will not try to summarize for all the novices in pronunciation obviously reading this. Caedes should be referred to as "that one web site with cool background images available for download", or the name should be changed.

"Caedes" is a Latin word meaning slaughter; from the Latin stem "caed" (kill/slaughter) > caedo (to kill/to slaughter). The correct (standard American italiante) pronunciation is chay dess. The accent is on the first syllable.

A quick perusal of the posts above should solve that query. failing that, a look at this page should help, or maybe here.

Sorry if this has been said before, but if you tell people about the site by saying it's "SAY-DEES" or "kay-deez" or "chay dess" or "Kay-dis" or anything else mentioned above you're STILL going to have to spell it to them before they stand a chance of finding it, so what's the point? Happy Kryssmss :-)
