All the things that were done in the film lab are now computerized functions inside the camera. If the work was critical, the photog would take a control exposure containing a 28% gray card. If true color were required, a color test card was included in an area that could be cropped out of the pictures.

The lab tech would read the control card image into a densitometer and dial up the correct color correction filter pack and use the readings to determine correct exposure.

For critical work, labs would buy large quantities of a job lot because the color rendition of color products varied with each job lot batch. When the emulsion batch number changed, test exposures were made and a basic color correction pack was built.

As you can see, a labor intensive process requiring specialized equipment, if you wanted true color. A fully corrected Kodacolor 8 x 10 print (or smaller) would run about about $100, and this was the cheap process. Dye transfer and carbro color process cost 2 and 4 times as much, respectively.

The cost of producing paper that was 100% radiation free was climbing as did the cost of silver drove Kodak to pursue alternatives.

20 years ago, Kodak, Canon, and Nikon made a commitment to digital photography that is really paying dividends today. Today's cameras have computers more powerful than those on board the lunar missions to process the images they download from the CCD chips and store on their memory cards. The down-side to this marvelous technology is that if some nut somewhere on our blue marble ever pops a nuke, all our archives and these electronic marvels will become nothing more than a paper weight in microseconds.

Hi, John.

I'm glad you like the pan strip. This one was a little awkward because I didn't shot it as a pan, but different shots from a small overlook. For the simplest job, use a tripod and about 30% overlap on each side. Most of my work was adjusting image size to get matching points.

Good luck, I know you have the ability. I can hardly wait to see your results.

It's called work with what you got, but after yesterdays comment about the arena, I thought I'd fire a warning shot.

When digitizing the first arena, the print slipped on the platen and I didn't catch it but a young man did. I was so busy working with the little imperfections that I didn't notice that the shot was crooked. :-/

The Coolpix was operating at max wide-field, so....

Glad you liked it. This would make a decent documentary photo, but little else, so I didn't want repeat my acknowledgement to many times.

Try Dry Helmen Stot kinda fast. Bayern (or Bavaria), pronounced Buy-urn) is my favorite place in the world. I left my appendix in Stuttgart in 1951 and go back to visit it every chance I get.

My wife is a Mannheimer from the western end of the Necker River. That almost makes her Bayerischer.

If you go to Bayern, wait until the last half of September so you may experience the magic of Oktoberfest. Spend the last few days of Oktoberfest in some place like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, so you may celebrate with the farmers and thier families in the way of Old Germany.

It will be the memory of a lifetime, I promise you.

Right you are. I burned in the opposite side until hints of gray started coming through on the opposite side. I thought about using unsharp masking but that would have a negative impact on the camera side of the pond. The s-pattern would have turned a little muddy. Thanks. Dresden is another fantastic city. Like SPB, it was level in WWII. Now it sports centuries old restorations in modern colors and some very nice modern stuff.

Maine has its craggy shoreline, and San Diego has the SDSU campus, and Palomar is only a couple of hours away

Hi John, thank you for the nice comment on my bee photo. I took that last Spring while sitting in my chair on my back deck. I used my Canon 100mm macro lens which I had to sell, but I am going to buy another one this spring. I want to turn my attention to flowers and insects while still posting a bird photo or two.
