garrettparkinson's Journal

Finality Uploaded: 07/24/14 5:02 PM GMT

Image: Finality

The aftermath of an amazing hunt that started approximately 1/2 mile away and took almost 1/2 hour. She started approx 1/2 mile away creeping through the tall grass, then dropped into a dry stream bed (where she could not be seen), circled around a group of about 15 Wildebeasts and then popped out of the streambed driving the group toward a flooded marsh. The group of Wildebeasts realizing they could not enter the marsh split into two groups heading in opposite directions. The calf made a wrong turn when the group split. Next there was a cloud of dust and it was all over.

Thanks, Garrett, for your comment on my Embrace.

You're right and you caught me at it!!! I was there for many shots with my steady stick...the light was right..wonderful autumnal sunshine, and then it struck and I had my burst on and voila! It happened.

Hello Garrett, I was fortunate enough to get a pit pass for this event. Before and after each race they take the boats out of the water. That dock is quite long and enough room for many boats. Check my other posts on this event.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

p.s. Looked at your website---Very Interesting!

Garrett,

Thank you for your suggestions regarding my image "Desert Flower"; I'd definitely have gotten closer to the subject flowers if I had a bit shorter of a lens. As far as the orientation of the image, I personally try to always use a horizontal format so that the image can be better used as a desktop. Again, thanks for your input!

Hello Garrett,
thanks for writing a comment on the eyes behind the mask.
I directed the whole shoot and had a team of 5 girls to help me.
I did not apply the paint myself, since we have a girl for each specific job on makeup, hair, paint, etc.
But the paint goes much furhter than just the face. The whole shoot took about 5 hours.
The reactions of people is very different (naturally), but I like the change of photography and to put it on Caedes.
Personally I like this very much, also because it takes the challenge a few steps further. I have to work with a team and as we practice we help each other with school projects and portfolios. So it is kind of a win win situations.
And from one shoot comes another and another...
And so I get into contact with more and more people and challenges.
Thanks!
Paul

Garrett,

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond to your question. I don't get a chance to log on very often with 15 month old twins.

To answer your question on my "Female Rubythroat and Zinnias" -
Stopping the wing motion is all done with flash and can be done with the garden variety Vivitar 283 flashes (you'll need a minimum of two, but more is always better) these are available on Ebay for about $50 and an additional $20 for the Varipower module available from B&H photo (or if you are mechanically inclined you can use a 100-kW variable resistor available at Radio Shack) This particular photo was taken with 1 Canon 550EX, 1 Canon 430EX and 2 Vivitar 283's all dialed back to 1/32nd power, a Canon 20D and Canon's 100-400mm IS lens at 200mm. The setup for the birds is about 15 feet from the camera and the flashes are about 18-20 inches from the food source. ISO 200, f11 @ 1/250th of a second. The most important thing is not having ANY other direct light sources or you will get "ghosting" on the fast moving wings from the residual light sources. I have hundreds of hummer pics, so you'll be seeing more in the future (as time permits).

Garrett,

Thanks for your comments on Double Delight, I appreciate the feedback.

Looks like I may have missed a unique opportunity this weekend, my in-laws called me very excited as it appears as though a male Rufous Hummingbird has taken up residence at their feeders in central Missouri. They're not usually found this far east. I'd have loved to add something other than Rubythroat to my image library, but it just wasn't in the cards for this weekend.

Thanks again,
HH
