Thanks for the comment on Cubed v4. The cubes aren't actually black, they are reflective...they look black due to the lighting from inside the main cube...which make the colours. It was an experimental piece however, and I may redo it in the future.

I'm delighted to know you liked them and really appreciate your honesty about the shines on the orbs/jewels. It's hard to see these things in one's own images sometimes, but looking at them I see exactly what you mean (though I'm not sure any of them look at all decent now). If you have any tips on doing this better, I'd love to hear them if you've a moment. I was (of course) trying to follow nmsmith's tutorials in general terms, but I find it hard to adapt the method to different situations and I'm not sure I do a satisfactory job even in the most straightforward cases.

I had a lot of fun making this series and I also put a lot of time into it, so it's great to know when people appreciate some of the results. I learnt a lot, too - mostly by accident, but still useful. Comments like yours will help me learn even more (I hope) and are therefore especially welcome.

Fractint and xfractint are both free. The code is not exactly open source, but it is available (with some restrictions on use). There are precompiled binaries of fractint, of course, and of xfractint for many systems. I had to compile it because I'm on OS X, but that wouldn't be necessary for most people. Information on getting a copy can be found here.

Warning: I don't honestly know how fractint and xfractint compare with some of the other programmes out there since I've never used any of the popular ones as I don't run Windows. From what I gather it has advantages in terms of flexibility and power even now, but it has been around a long time and the interface is probably not what you might expect. I've only scratched the surface of it, and I know it. It's addictive but takes some getting used to. (Maybe true of other programmes.) If you're interested, take a look and let me know if you've got any questions you think I might be able to answer (unlikely, but you never know).

Welll ... I took some ... some, artistic licence, if you will. The fractal I used got severely distorted in the process in an attempt to position some of the 'spirals.' And then, I thought ... its' a fantasy, and that it would bring home the message well.

The distortion (literally; Edit >> Transform >> Distort) I did in PS ... however, did add some nice depth ... so, I stuck with it.

*starts frantically searching through the ... ahem ;o) ... 'options,' looking for 'fame' *
