got the Soviet Union project medals from a cosmonaut visiting during the Russian Space exhibit tour. He visited our observatory, where I learned he was interested in some stamps I had in my collection.
They are all made from the same alloy that the used in building each spacecraft. It's not a good metal for striking medals, but it adds a little something to the sentimental value for those who worked on the mission.
The project personnel didn't earn a lot, but the USSR was high on recognition, both positively and negatively.
The only thing we did was win the race to the moon. They dominated in all the other areas, in part, because of their geography and the rest based on their commitment to space for its propaganda and military value.
